9 a.m. EST -- As we wait for the first trade of the day, keep in mind that players who were placed on waivers over the weekend could be claimed at noon EST. Grant Clitsome of Columbus and Brian Rolston of the Islanders are two players who could have new homes later today.
CBC's Elliotte Friedman poses a question on Twitter: "After Nabokov (who may not be available), is there another goalie out there who can make a difference?"
Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero is known to make a move during the deadline, but it seems very quiet out there at the moment. He told the Tribune Review's Josh Yohe that he's not close to anything. Things change over time and the Penguins are still waiting to find out if that Crosby kid will be their big second half addition.
Washington Capitals GM George McPhee could be an active player today if the price is right. Steve Whyno of the Washington Times reports that forward Nicklas Backstrom is on long-term injury reserve, freeing up $7.6 million in cap space for the Capitals.
