No. 1 Star:
Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers
On the same night HBO was chronicling his comeback from a concussion, Giroux completed that comeback with a 4-point night (hey, just like Sid) in a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars. He scored his 17th of the season to answer Michael Ryder's goal in the first period. He then assisted on goals by Wayne Simmonds and Jaromir Jagr on the power play, and then Andrej Meszaros in the third.
No. 2 Star: Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Colorado Avalanche
After Jay McClement's controversial tally in the second gave the Avs a 3-2 lead, Giggy shut the door with 11 saves in the third period and 37 for the game. Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod had the other goals for Colorado. David Backes and Chris Stewart scored for the Blues.
No. 3 Star: Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks
In the game of the night, Luongo was strong in a 38-save effort, as the Canucks defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-2. Luongo stopped 31 of 32 shots during the final two periods, including 16 in the third — some of them highlight reel.
Honorable mention: Jason LaBarbera made 34 saves while Lauri Korpikoski and Ray Whitney had a goal and an assist as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3. … Corey Crawford stopped 20 shots for the Chicago Blackhawks, who routed the Montreal Canadiens, 5-1. Jonathan Toews scored his 20th and Patrick Sharp tallied his 18th. … Logan Couture scored two goals in a 5-goal first-period barrage for the San Jose Sharks, who embarrassed the Tampa Bay Lightning, 7-2. Joe Thornton, Michel Handzus and Ryane Clowe had two assists. Chris Higgins, Cody Hodgson, Alex Burrows and Alex Edler had the Canucks goals; Drew Miller and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Wings. … Daniel Sedin's soccer-style header pass was pretty awesome.
Did you know? Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and fiancé Kristin Cavallari attended the Blackhawks game. No word on the whereabouts of L.C.
Dishonorable mention: Peter Laviolette of the Flyers should be getting a call from the NHL over this incident against Steve Ott. … Mathieu Garon was pulled by the Bolts after three goals on eight shots in 6:21 against the Sharks. … Brian Elliott was shaky against the Avs. … Finally, three videos from the Red Wings/Canucks game. Niklas Kronwall's big hit on Ryan Kesler, skates in the air:
And this messy play on Edler's goal, as Jannik Hanson crashed into Jimmy Howard (after a Henrik Zetterberg shove) and set Howard off.
And this leg-on-leg hit with Kesler and Zetterberg:
