Friday’s Three Stars: Ryans rule; Flyers spoil Boudreau

No. 1 Star:

Ryan Jones, Edmonton Oilers

Jones had a third-period hat trick, his first in the NHL, to lead the Oilers to a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Edmonton was down 2-1 when Jones scored on a wraparound. His one-timer later in the period made it 4-2 for the Oilers. He finished the trick with an empty netter.

No. 2 Star: Ryan O'Reilly, Colorado Avalanche

The Avs forward assisted on Milan Hejduk's ninth of the season to tie the game against the St. Louis Blues. The scored his fourth goal of the season in the third period to tie the game again. In the shootout, "The Factor" (actual nickname) scored the lone goal, on the backhand past Jaroslav Halak (33 saves), to give Colorado its second straight win, 3-2, over the Blues.

No. 3 Star: Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers

Giroux continued this MVP season for the Flyers, assisting on Jaromir Jagr's second-period goal that sparked a rally and then scoring his 14th goal of the season on an overtime power play. Philadelphia topped Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau in his debut, 4-3.

Honorable mention: The Detroit Red Wings scored three first-period goals and cruised to their seventh straight victory, 4-1 at the Buffalo Sabres. Johan Franzen scored his 11; Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist; Jimmy Howard made 27 saves. … Kyle Brodziak scored two goals, including a breakaway tally in the third, as the Minnesota Wild topped the New Jersey Devils, 4-2. Josh Harding made 22 saves in relief of the injured Niklas Backstrom, as the Wild moved back into first overall in the NHL. … Zach Parise, Minnesota native, scored a goal and had an assist against the Wild. … Jonathan Toews scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Chicago Blackhawks the 5-4 win over the New York Islanders. Toews also scored a shorthanded goal and assisted on Patrick Sharp's power-play tally in the third. Corey Crawford made 37 saves. … Nino Niederreiter scored the game-tying goal in the third for the Isles. … Semyon Varlamov made 35 saves and three more in the shootout for the win. … Kevin Shattenkirk scored a goal and Chris Stewart had an assist in their return to Denver. … Andrew Gordon, who played for Boudreau with the Capitals, scored his first as a Duck. … Teemu Selanne scored his ninth; Jaromir Jagr scored his seventh and eighth; yes, it's actually 2011. … Jonas Hiller made 43 saves. … Derek Dorsett had two goals of the Blue Jackets, including an unassisted shorthanded goal. … Hell of a save from Halak vs. the Avs.

Fight of the Night: Here is Jared Boll vs. Darcy Hordichuk, with Hordichuk getting the knockdown -- and he was a bit pumped up after it.

Did you know? Buffalo D Joe Finley made his NHL debut and became the ninth rookie to play for the Sabres this season. Philadelphia leads the league with 10. (AP)

Dishonorable mention: Martin Brodeur was pulled just 8:17 into the game, after Dany Heatley, Brodziak and Casey Wellman scored in a 3:03 span. …Scary skate slash for Nathan Gerbe. … Ryan Getzlaf, Ducks captain, took a tripping penalty and an unsportsmanlike minor in overtime. … Grant Clitsome, Mark Letestu and Vinny Prospal were all minus-3 for the Jackets. … Milan Jurcina and Steve Staios were a minus-3 for the Isles.
