Provided he clears waivers, the signing of Antti Miettinen by the Tampa Bay Lightning isn't a bad one at all, considering their deficiencies this season.
The Lightning have four forwards with more than 10 points this season: Steven Stamkos (30), Marty St. Louis (22), Vinny Lecavalier (19), Teddy Purcell (15) and Ryan Malone (14).
They're not getting the same contributions offensively from the likes of Steve Downie, Dominic Moore and Nate Thompson; and while Sean Bergenheim isn't exactly lighting it up for the Panthers (4 goals in 23 games), they miss his versatility.
Miettinen's the kind of role player this roster could use right about now, and he returns to the NHL after a rather regrettable decision to leave for the KHL's riches last summer. He's a feisty forward who can contribute on special teams. Also, he's a huge Nirvana fan.
Now it's just a matter of whether Miettinen ends up with the Lightning or if someone swoops in and pulls a Svatos.
Welcome back to the NHL, Mittens. You'll notice your new coach appreciates the virtues of "positional defense" much like your former one with the Minnesota Wild.
