At the 15-second mark of this highlight package, San Jose Sharks center Andrew Desjardins does something that's the hockey equivalent of sending up a flare to get Brendan Shanahan's attention:
Blackhawks defenseman Sami Lepisto skates to the end boards to chase the puck; Desjardins hits him in the back with a cross check, knocks him off balance and sends him crashing into the boards.
For that, Desjardins earned a 2-minute minor for boarding … and a date with the Shanahammer on Monday afternoon. The Dept. of Player safety has shown some tolerance for suspension-worthy acts; but not for full-speed shoves into the end boards.
This play seems similar to the Mats Zuccarello incident vs. the Los Angeles Kings earlier this season:
That earned the Hobbit Wizard a $2,500 fine; it would be surprising to see Andrew Desjardins get anything more than that; his previous suspension came in the AHL.
