Video: The mess that Mike Blunden made in New York

There are a lot of things wrong about the following sequence from the New York Rangers' game against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night:

As Brandon Dubinsky skated through the neutral zone, Mike Blunden of Montreal nailed him with a big open-ice hit. This drew the ire of the Rangers, as Ryan Callahan skated over and took him on. A big scrum followed, along with two fights: Callahan vs. Blunden and Petteri Nokelainen vs. Michael Sauer.

Now, Blunden was given an interference call, which is a bad call. Callahan wasn't given an instigator, which is a debatable call. Hal Gill and Brandon Dubinsky were given roughing calls. Nokelainen and Sauer were given game misconducts for their fight.

The real interesting twist? The Habs were given a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty because Blunden jumped over the boards and hit Dubinsky before his Montreal teammate was able to get back to the bench. So he was a sixth skater when he engaged Dubinsky.

Said Blunden on CBC between periods: "I thought [Erik Cole] was just stepping onto the bench. I didn't think we had too many men. I just saw Dubinsky coming down the wing and I just put my shoulder down and hit him."

So there you go.
