Puck Headlines: Malkin, Colaiacovo out; Canucks tough enough?

• What better way to (continue to) celebrate the Boston Bruins' Stanley Cup championship and/or welcome guests into your home than with this Jack Edwards quote cross stitch pattern? Sigh … if only they could have created one for the famers' speech. [Etsy, via reader Kathryn Elise]

Dany Heatley expects there will be animosity in Ottawa tonight. How perceptive. [FS North]

Eric Nystrom is back through waivers for the Minnesota Wild. [Star Tribune]

• Why there should be no shame in Nikita Filatov's healthy scratch for the Ottawa Senators: "He appears to be somewhat timid so far, perhaps out of fear of making a mistake, perhaps for some other reason. But tonight seems like one of those games where a player is sent to the press box to watch the game and recalibrate himself, rather than to feel shame." [Silver Seven, The 6th Sens]

• Brandon Worley on Sean Avery's AHL demotion and what it means for the Dallas Stars: "Right now, the Stars are still above the cap floor. With Adam Pardy on injured reserve the Stars have Philip Larsen up from the AHL, whose cap hit is enough to lift the Stars above the floor. Yet Pardy will soon be ready to come off IR and there's a good chance he could play on Thursday. When that happens, Larsen would have to go back to the AHL and suddenly the Stars would fall beneath the cap floor." [Defending Big D]

Evgeni Malkin joins Sidney Crosby on the sidelines for the Pittsburgh Penguins' home opener against the Florida Panthers. [Post-Gazette]

Rich Peverley gets a 3-year, $9.75 million deal with the Boston Bruins because he plays with a chip on his shoulder: "There's teams that get rid of you, and there's teams that have no interest. You want to prove people wrong. You see that every year. Guys are on waivers, guys get traded. They want to prove people wrong. There's nothing wrong with that. It's a good motivational tool." [Bruins Blog]

David Krejci was banged up at Bruins practice today. Could this open the door to Tyler Seguin skating with Lucic and Horton? [CSN Boston]

• The Vancouver Canucks may have failed to sufficiently respond physically when one of their star players was bullied by an opponent? Well that seems completely in-character … [Pass It To Bulis]

• Injury update for the Montreal Canadiens: Jaroslav Spacek's out 2-3 weeks with an upper body injury; Michael Cammalleri's out up to two weeks with a lower body injury a.k.a. a leg laceration. [Hockey Inside/Out]

Carlo Colaiacovo injured; in other news, dogs and cats continue to have philosophical disagreements. (The St. Louis Blues also snagged defenseman Taylor Chorney off of waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. [STLToday.com]

• Wonder how many of these we'll see: Washington Wizards fan starts a hockey blog. "I have watched 0 regular season Capitals games in my life. I have seen some of the playoff games in recent years but I just don't like watching hockey all the time. This year, with no NBA, I have decided to 'force' myself to watch hockey and to become a 'hardcore' Caps fan." [Caps Basketball, via Russian Machine Never Breaks]

• Mike Peluso on fighting and, uh, how times have changed a little bit over the years in the NHL: "When I played and you got a concussion, you were asked who's the prime minister of Canada or who's the president of the United States, and when you answered, you went right back out." [QMI]

Brian McGrattan will now be throwing bombs for the Nashville Predators, as he's claimed on waivers from Anaheim. [CP]

• Claude Noel is still trying to figure out what the Winnipeg Jets will be this season. Spoiler: Stanley Cup [expletive] [expletive] champs baby … [Globe & Mail]

• The return of hockey to Yaroslavl as that community continues to mourn the Lokomotiv players lost in that plane crash. [KHL]

Artem Anisimov on nearly going to play for Lokomotiv last summer as a free agent, and whether "someone from above protected" him: "It's possible.  I try not to think about it.  The guys can't be brought back.  We must play for them, they will remain in our hearts forever." [Beyond The Blueshirts]

• The Capitals' high-priced checking line and the pairing of Alzner and Carlson might just be the shutdown unit they've lacked for years. [Japers' Rink]

• Damien Cox believes Don Cherry is irrelevant: "To be honest, I just don't see Cherry being very influential anymore. He's got his devoted constituency, but it's not growing. He's been pushing no-touch icing for a decade, for example, and has managed to achieve zero, so how influential, exactly, can he be? He is incredibly popular, which is a different thing entirely, and he knows how to generate headlines to feed his ego, commercial interests and attract viewers to his show, which is why the CBC continues to pander to him." [Toronto Star]

• The Los Angeles Kings are just fine with their top line of Anze Kopitar and wingers Simon Gagne and Justin Williams. [LA Kings Insider]

• Who are the teams stumbling out of the gate in junior hockey? Are the Winterhawks in trouble? [Buzzing The Net]

• Elliotte Friedman believes Kyle Turris wants out of Phoenix. "As mentioned on Hotstove, Don Maloney re-iterated that he will not trade Kyle Turris, saying that if Turris wants to play anywhere in the NHL this year, it will be in Phoenix. After talking to a few people, here's the picture that emerges: Turris wants to be traded. 'The feeling is he will sign a reasonable contract with a new team,' says another GM. That eliminates an offer sheet (should we actually see one), because Maloney would match. If Turris doesn't sign by Dec. 1, he can't play this year." He counts the Calgary Flames among the suitors. [CBC]

• The San Jose Sharks would like a word with the NHL's schedule makers. [Mercury News]

• "The lead singer of Smash Mouth promised to eat a bunch of eggs if nerds raised money for his charity. Nerds did, but then he didn't eat the eggs. Now finally he ate the eggs, and for some reason S.J. Sharkie was there." [Battle of Cali]
