Looks like 37-year old Peter Forsberg has one more comeback in his body, er, foot.
Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports that Forsberg will ink a contract with the Colorado Avalanche today before the team heads out on to Phoenix to begin a four-game road trip. While Forsberg will likely be part of the traveling party, he will not play tomorrow against the Coyotes, according to Dater.
Forsberg will not have to pass through waivers once he signs a contract with the Avs because he did not play a game in Europe this season.
The future Hall of Famer began practicing with Colorado two weeks ago to determine whether his chronic foot issues could withstand the demand of playing against NHL talent.
Colorado has won just once in six games and sit 12th in the Western Conference, four points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the final playoff spot.
The Avs currently rank second to last in goals-against/game and fifth overall in goals-for/game. Foppa's addition won't solve the the problem of defense, but it could be an inexpensive effort to jumpstart the lineup.
However, it's hard to imagine what kind of spark a guy who hasn't played in the NHL in almost three years could provide for the Avs. In need of points to get back into the playoff race in the West, will Forsberg's presence (and obvious questions about his health) merely become a distraction for the team once he starts playing?
UPDATE: Forsberg spoke to reports after he officially signed a deal for the remainder of the season with Colorado. Sources tell Dater it's a prorated $1 million deal.
"It's been feeling better and better. I came here to try it," said the 2003 NHL MVP. "I wanted to play hockey, I love playing hockey. I'm not sure I'm going to be good or nothing like that. "We'll see how it goes when I start playing.
"I don't think I can play right away," added the Swedish forward. "It's been feeling better, but the first couple practices were tough. Coming here, guys seemed like they were flying around you. I felt like I was 47 instead of 37."

"The last couple of days have been horrible, actually. Going back and forth, not knowing," said Forsberg. "And it's going to be kind of nerve-wracking to see how it goes when I get out there too. Like I said, I'm not sure how it's going to go - if I'm going to be good or not - but I'd like to give it a shot."
