ST. PAUL — Mark Scheifele had a name problem at the 2011 NHL Draft. Like the fact that Winnipeg officials asked how to pronounce his name, because they had not idea how to. (It's "Shy-Flee.") Like the fact that the Winnipeg fans at Xcel Energy Center — and there were plenty of them — chanted "We Want Sean" before the soon-to-be-Jets picked seventh overall.
If they wanted Sean Couturier, they may have been disappointed with the pick. But Scheifele, a center with the Barrie Colts, couldn't have been happier being Winnipeg's first pick:
Seriously, how can you not love that level of enthusiasm? Scheifele wasn't projected as a top 10 pick by many. The shock hadn't worn off.
The "Dale" that Scheifele referenced is Dale Hawerchuk, head coach of the Colts and a Winnipeg Jets hockey legend — giving this pick an appropriate note of nostalgia.
No Jets jersey for Scheifele, though. That'll arrive when the team decides on a new design for the logo. Because even if the name's the same, they'll obviously make bank with a revamped jersey.
